An Older Generation Falls Prey to Eating Disorders...

@ By TARA PARKER-POPE @ New York Times

More than 10 million Americans suffer from anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders. And while people tend to think such problems are limited to adolescence and young adulthood, Judith Shaw knows otherwise. A 58-year-old yoga instructor in St. Louis, Ms. Shaw says she was nearing 40 when she decided to “get healthy” after having children. Soon, diet and exercise became an obsession....finish article @ http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/28/an-older-generation-falls-prey-to-eating-disorders/

The women willing to trade a year of their life for a perfect body

www.dailymail.co.uk
A survey of female students aged 18 to 65 at British universities found that almost one in three would be willing to die younger in exchange for the ‘ideal’ figure.

State your Case:
Can you be an example today of a woman who values her integrity, character and contributions more than her appearance? This article inspires me to refute the societal pressure to measure my worth by weight. How about you - what do you think?

Parental Involvement Important in the Prevention and Awareness of Eating Disorders…

@ Jacquelyn Ekern, MS, LPC, Founder and Director of Eating Disorder Hope and Debra Cooper, Expert Writer on eating disorders.

Eating disorders are now epidemic in the United States. Approximately 11 million women and girls struggle with anorexia and bulimia. Although the average age of onset is 14, girls are being diagnosed as young as eight.

In years past, an eating disorder stereotype existed. This person was female, white, usually first-born or an only child, a high-achiever and from an affluent family. That stereotype is long gone. Today, anorexia and bulimia are equal-opportunity disorders. They flourish in every culture, race, ethnicity, social-economic group, and religion throughout our country. And, whereas eating disorders were once exclusively a female issue, this is no longer the case. Anorexia and bulimia are also on the rise in the male population.

In other words, no individual is exempt and no family is immune. The following is designed to provide parents with the information required to understand eating disorders and help prevent one from occurring in their home...Finish Article

The last socially acceptable prejudice is against fat people.

Remuda Ranch Programs for Eating and Anxiety Disorders provides intensive treatment to women and girls. We treat anorexia, bulimia, anxiety, and related issues. Women and girls stay for 45-60 days, which is the minimum time required for true and lasting change to occur. Treatment takes place in peaceful ranch-like settings in Arizona and Virginia. Separate, age-appropriate programs ensure that patients are surrounded by their peers and receive treatment from professionals specializing in that specific age group.

Patients receive an individualized treatment plan designed to meet their precise medical, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs. Each woman and girl has a multi-disciplinary treatment team dedicated to helping her get well. This team includes a psychiatric specialist, a primary care physician, a registered dietitian, a licensed master's or doctoral-level therapist, a psychologist, and registered nurses. In addition to individual and group therapy, patients engage in innovative treatment strategies such as equine, art, body image and challenge course.

EATING DISORDER TREATMENT PROGRAM at SeaSide Palm Beach

The EATING DISORDER TREATMENT PROGRAM at SeaSide Palm Beach specializes in helping individuals who suffer from a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders, which is when an individual suffers simultaneously from both a psychiatric disorder (like an eating disorder) as well as a substance abuse problem (like alcohol abuse or drug abuse).

Most people are very surprised to learn that eating disorders have little to do with food. Especially when one considers that many people who suffer from eating disorders actually have an unhealthy obsession with food. In the majority of cases, eating disorders have more to do with a lack of emotional well-being resulting from their inability to identify and communicate their own needs and wants effectively to others.

To find out more please call us 24/7 toll-free at (888) 432-2467 today for help!

Gotta Have It! Freedom from wanting everything right here, right now

By Dr. Gregory L. Jantz with Ann McMurray @ www.aplaceofhope.com

This book is about needs and wants, about the excessities of life, which is a made-up word for a very real situation for many people. Excessities occur when our excesses become necessities. This book is about the compulsion to overindulge in any number of bizarre, comical and not-so-funny behaviors. Excessity is the Gotta Have It! impulse that throws caution to the wind and demands immediate satisfaction. It is the blindness that occurs when comfort becomes more important than consequences.

Gotta Have It! shows up in a variety of shapes and sizes, each excessity taking on the unique characteristics of the person who creates it. This book looks at it, not from the safety of a front page story about someone else, but close up, right now, in our own lives and the lives of those we love.

Excessity is, at the heart, about feeding our wants and desires, while at the same time starving our true needs. The more we starve what we really need, the greater our hunger grows so we stuff ourselves with more and more of our wants. We stuff ourselves full of our wants and still find that we're starving, empty and desperate.

Make a Difference on Capitol Hill with the Eating Disorders Coalition

Join Us on Capitol Hill and Make a Difference

Come to the EDC National Lobby Day, April 12, 2011

Dear Friend of the EDC,

Think only paid lobbyists can influence policy makers? Think again! As a constituent with an important message to share - you too can influence federal policy. Join the Eating Disorders Coalition for our April Lobby Day on Capitol Hill in Washington DC where your voice will make a difference.

This is one of the most important events all year -- and an exciting opportunity to meet directly with your elected officials or their staff about legislation that will impact all those affected by eating disorders.

If this is your first time joining us don't worry; we'll prep you beforehand by teaching you about lobbying and what to expect We will also review the first ever comprehensive eating disorders bill in Congress: the Federal Response to Eliminate Eating Disorders Act (the FREED Act) - for which we will advocate. This bill will provide research funding, prevention grants, and treatment options that will save lives!

So there is no need to worry that you don't know what you are doing. During training you will be able to ask questions, practice lobbying and get comfortable speaking up before heading to the halls of Congress.

Hear it from the advocates first hand:

"Lobbying on the hill was definitely an experience that I will never forget and one that I’m proud to say that I was a part of. I didn’t know what to expect going into the day and was put at ease with the help of the members of the EDC, group leaders and even the other first time lobbyists. The training sessions prior to lobbying were helpful to understand how to effectively lobby and what it all entailed. We were able to role play sitting with Members of Congress to clarify what we were going to say and how the meeting would operate. . . Fortunately, the responses we received in each of the meetings were positive for the most part. We were even able to convince Keith Ellison to co-sponsor the FREED Act before leaving his office. [How great] to see that kind of response and know that your words are truly making an impact."

RSVP today to make this kind of impact.

"Thank you for organizing such a great Lobby Day, I was really impressed by the number and caliber of people who took part. I am looking forward to getting even more involved with the EDC . . . I find the EDC so inspirational."

- Jocelyn, Lobby Day participant

(Washington, D.C. - March 3, 2011) - The United States took an important step toward addressing the national emergency of eating disorders when Senators Tom Harkin, Amy Klobuchar, and Al Franken introduced the Federal Response to Eliminate Eating Disorders (FREED) Act today.

“The FREED Act is the first legislative effort in the history of the Senate to comprehensively confront the seriousness and deadly threat of eating disorders in the United States. We are proud to have Senators Harkin, Klobuchar and Franken champion our cause,” said Jeanine Cogan, Policy Director of the Eating Disorders Coalition.

A coordinated national response like the FREED Act can help the millions of Americans suffering (and, too often, dying) from eating disorders.

“It has been ten years since anorexia killed my daughter Anna,” said EDC Board Member Kitty Westin. “And eating disorders have killed thousands of Americans since then. It’s time for Congress to pass the FREED Act as a critical first step in addressing this national emergency.”

Eating disorders do not discriminate: men and women, all economic classes, old and young are affected. Sadly, eating disorders even touch young children. According to a recent report in the December issue of PEDIATRICS, Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, hospitalizations for children with eating disorders under age 12 increased by a shocking 119% for the years 1999 to 2006.

The FREED Act would fund much needed research to better understand eating disorders and provides solutions for prevention, education, screening, diagnosis and treatment. Among other things, the legislation would fund grants to conduct research on treatment efficacy, train health professionals and school personnel to identify and respond to eating disorders, and build on existing reform efforts to ensure that treatment is available to those who need it.

Ten months ago, two days before she was to join the Eating Disorders Coalition citizen lobbying effort on Capitol Hill, a young woman from Pennsylvania named Nicole died in her sleep from her eating disorder. Nicole’s mother sadly states, “If the FREED Act was in place, I might still have my daughter with me today.” Nicole’s aunt, Wendy Bloom, added, “The FREED Act will stop the endless pain for millions of people. It will allow treatment for a disease without the fear of not completing their treatment because their insurance doesn't cover it. It will end the torment and pain of another mother burying her child because she couldn't afford treatment.”
