Hungry For Hope - Restoring Identity: 2009 Remuda Ranch Christian Conference on Eating Disorders

Those living with disordered eating and body image issues hear so many conflicting voices it is difficult to know what to believe. At times they may even wonder who they are. Their identity can feel lost in calories, numbers on the scale and habitual behaviors.
Additionally, as professionals trying to help these men and women, we may find ourselves experiencing much of the same confusion.
How do we help them recover a sense of who they are from a Biblical perspective?
Do we build self-esteem or rebuke dangerous behaviors and outright denial?
Do we encourage them to love themselves or practice self-denial?

As a Christian professional or ministry leader, you need a Biblical foundation to navigate through these issues.

Hungry for Hope: Restoring Identity
is a conference designed to equip you in the areas of body image and disordered eating with a special focus on the role of identity in recovery. Held June 3 - 5, 2009, this event will take place at historic Glen Eyrie, a Christian retreat center and home of Navigators in Colorado Springs.

Eating Disorder Hope Initiates College Hope!

Announcement: Open invitation to join in the Eating Disorder Hope national collegiate effort to promote Eating Disorder Awareness. We launched this program now because of the upcoming official National Eating Disorders Awareness week of February 22-29, 2009. Universities across the US are developing creative and exciting plans for making the most of the NEDA week on their campus. In an effort to share ideas and assist other universities in creating a successful National Eating Disorders Awareness week on their campuses, we are gathering outlines, details and ideas from different schools that are open to sharing what they have found to be successful and what to avoid. Check out the new College Hope page!

If you would like to contribute to this report and/or have useful ideas to share about College/University plans for NEDA week, please email: jacquelyn@EatingDisorderHope.com. Include the school's NEDA week plans, any relevant details and downloadable attachments or forms that other universities can use, as well. These ideas will be published on the College Hope page of the site, and many schools will benefit from your generous sharing and ideas. We would also be happy to list your university counseling center information and link this back to your website.

Your contribution of creative ideas will inspire many to initiate or develop their own campus NEDA week!

Hope you will join in this important effort!

~ Please forward this to colleagues at other universities who may want to participate, too! ~

Remuda Ranch Reports More Women Seek to be Thin During Pregnancy

Women With a History of Eating Disorders More at Risk for "Pregorexia"

Phoenix -- January 19, 2009 -- Remuda Ranch Programs for Eating and Anxiety Disorders (www.remudaranch.com), the nation's leading eating disorder treatment center, reports there's a new pressure to look perfect while pregnant.

"With the media giving so much focus to pregnant celebrities, there's an
increased pressure to look perfect and thin during pregnancy," said Brenda
Woods, MD, director of medical services at Remuda Ranch. "Our society's
'thin' ideal has crossed over to pregnant women. Many women are feeling the
pressure to not gain too much weight during pregnancy and to lose their
pregnancy weight very quickly. Also, it's important to note that adolescents
with eating disorder histories are in their reproductive years."

Remuda Ranch reports some of the warning signs that a woman is suffering
from an eating disorder while pregnant include:

Failure to gain weight while pregnant
Poor fetal growth
Exercise beyond what is healthy while pregnant

If a woman is suffering from an eating disorder while pregnant, she faces
many medical complications including: low birth weight in the infant;
possible neurological damage to the baby; increased caesarean section rate;
and increased miscarriage early in pregnancy.
"A woman with a history of an eating disorder may be more vulnerable during
pregnancy," adds Dr. Woods. "The emotional stressors of facing parenthood
may push a woman with a history of an eating disorder back into those
behaviors."

Normal weight gain is 25 to 40 pounds during pregnancy for a woman who is
already at a healthy weight. The numbers range from 35 to 50 pounds for an
underweight woman. These numbers can cause extreme anxiety for women with eating disorders.

"Women need to be educated about what's normal when pregnant," said Dr.
Woods. "Doctors need to screen pregnant women for eating disorder beliefs
and practices. Pregnancy is a great time to make changes that will not only
help you, but also guarantee a better future for your child."

Adolescents needed for BN study!

Our colleague, Dr. Rachel Marsh, is still looking for adolescents with BN and sub-clinical BN (ages 12-18) to participate in her study. Dr. Marsh's study of adults with BN was just published in the Archives of General Psychiatry on Monday (attached) and has been getting a ton of press. See this article from the Washington Post, for example:

Please help Dr. Marsh by spreading the word about her need for additional adolescent participants. Dr. Marsh points out that it is important that we study younger patients - to see how these behavioral and brain abnormalites arise and possibly predict the development of BN.
Interested patients should call Laura at 212-543-5316

Also, here is the information on Dr. Rachel Marsh:
