Curvy Women in International Fashion

From editorial to runway, women with curves are making waves in fashion

TORONTO - Slender models still dominate the fashion world, but a growing movement within the industry appears to be embracing women with curvier figures.

Vogue Italia launched "Vogue Curvy," a special section on its website devoted to celebrating fuller-figured beauty. V Magazine's "Size Issue" had a "Curves Ahead" photo shoot showcasing plus-sized models. The April edition of French Elle has full-figured model Tara Lynn on the cover and a multi-page editorial spread on plus-sized models.

In a significant shift, popular German women's magazine Brigitte announced last fall it would highlight "real women" rather than professional models, a move editor-in-chief Andreas Lebert said was a response to readers increasingly saying they were tired of seeing the "protruding bones" of models who weigh far less than the average woman.

Curvier women are also making waves on the catwalk. For a second straight season, Canadian designer Mark Fast presented several plus-sized models on the runway at London Fashion Week in February. And at the recent LG Fashion Week in Toronto, renowned American model Crystal Renn came north of the border to don looks from the affordable Canadian apparel line Joe Fresh Style.

The 23-year-old Renn has spoken candidly on the subject of body image in the fashion industry, and openly shared her own struggles with weight, health and self-esteem in her memoir "Hungry."

Renn, a shapely size 12, said she once suffered from "full-blown anorexia," dropping to 95 pounds. But the model's curvier figure hasn't been a barrier to attaining high-fashion success, walking the runway for Fast and Jean Paul Gaultier, being in ads for Dolce and Gabbana and appearing in Vogue and Glamour.

"When I accepted who I am, I think that's when people started to appreciate me for being unique," Renn said backstage following the Joe Fresh Style show.
