21 Year old Brazilian Model dies of Anorexia

read story on CNN here:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/americas/11/16/model.anorexia.reut/index.html

This is terribly sad. Especially because I know some young women just as underweight who refuse to believe they are at risk of death or health complications. The denial in anorexia is deep and not easily penetrated. My heart breaks for the mother of this beautiful girl; while I also applaud Brazil for taking a stance on too low of weight/bmi in models.

Please share your thoughts.

Warmly,

The famished body is banned for Fashion Week in Madrid

This is an exciting development in the world of fashion. Perhaps the public is now willing to encourage healthier body images in women? What are your thoughts?

Hero

Eating Disorder Hope
"You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do. " - Eleanor Roosevelt
I thought this quote was very inspiring! Do you have a favorite quote? While going through hard times, who was someone that made you feel like you can do it?Who is someone that is helping you overcome it, and move on with your life? Who is someone that is helping you to become the person you want to be? Let that special person know how you feel.

Mans best Friend

Eating Disorder Hope
Studies have shown that owning a pet can help a person attain a better level of physical and mental health. An animal can actually reduce stress in your life. Studies have also shown that in women the presence of a dog can actually lower blood pressure better than the presence of friends. So if you dont own a pet then take a friends dog for a walk or pet sit. Do you have any animals in your life? How do they help you? Do you think having a pet in your life could or does minimize the stresses of life or your eating disorder? I have a dog and when I am down my dog senses it and gives me extra attention. I love that she does that, it really helps me to feel better. If you dont have anyone to talk to you animals cant talk back, but they will listen. Hey who does not talk to animals? :)

Vacation- bliss or nightmare ?

Eating Disorder Hope
Summertime is a great opportunity for most to go on vacation. Some people long for the chance to get away from everyday stresses of life, and let loose. I love to go on vacation for that reason, but sometimes when I am taken out of my everyday environment I do tend to get homesick. Does vacation give you a chance to break free from your eating disorder for a short period of time, or does it take you into an uncomfortable environment? If it puts you in uncomfortable environment does it make the eating disorder worse? Share your feelings about vacations, and past or present experiences.

summertime

Eating Disorder Hope
How does summer affect your eating disorders? I know for me in the summertime I am less hungry, because it is so hot in Texas it takes your appetite away. The thought of wearing a bathing suit can also be scary to many people.I really love summertime, but my favorite season is fall. In fall the temperature is perfect, the scenery is beautiful, and I am back on my regular schedule. What is your favorite season, and why? Does there seem to be a better season when dealing with your eating disorder?

Feeling Alone

Eating Disorder Hope
It has been estimated that 8 million Americans have an eating disorder, seven million of those being women and one million men. Having any problem can make one feel alone and isolated from the rest of the population. When fighting an eating disorder it is you vs. your body and this can make you feel very alone. So many people battle this disease daily and have conquered it! How do you stray from the isolated feeling? Does going off to inpatient clinic make you feel more alone?

Genetic link

Eating Disorder Hope
Researchers have found that there might be a biological predispostion to eating disorders. With this thought did you find out that someone in your family also had the same problem? If you did find that a family member also suffered from an eating disorder, how did it make you feel? Did ya'll encourage eachother in a healthy or unhealthy manner?

The Meaning of Food

Eating Disorder Hope
The body needs five things to survive Carbohydrates, Protein, Fat, Vitamins, Minerals, and Water. To many people food is so much more then the gift of survival. Food is family, art, happiness, health, memories, home, culture, and many more things. One thing that food is to me is fun,I love getting to try different foods and customs. When I get to try these new foods I feel it gives me an understanding of that cultures traditions and way of life.
On a positive note, what is food to you?

Winning the battle

Eating Disorder Hope
What are some techniques you use to overcome bad thoughts and habits? These things you do may help other people overcome some of their biggest battles.
So lets get to sharing....

One of my bad habits is procrastination. To overcome this problem I make myself do one piece of homework a day. If I skip a day I have to stay home one day on the weekend to make up for it! If I am overwhelmed with homework I go for a run, it seems to always clear my mind.

Celebrities and Eating disorders

Eating Disorder Hope
Thanks for all the comments on the last blog, they were all very good and interesting discussions!
Lately there has been a lot of debate dealing with specific stars and how thin they have become. Some stars like lindsey lohan have came out and admitted that they do have a problem and get help from it. Other stars have remained underweight and appear to be emancipated. These stars claim that they just have a great trainer or a great chef. How does all of this debate make you feel? When you see some of the stars that have not came out with their problem yet, what do you think?

Nutrition vs. Calories

Eating Disorder Hope
Considering what little calories are taken in by most people with eating disorders every bit of food ingested needs to have the best nutritional value possible. So when choosing foods to eat do you ever consider nutritional value over calories? Or even nutritional value over fat content?

ART, Music, Dance, etc

Dear Bloggers,
I know many of you are artistic, musical, dancers, etc. A very special breed of folks that contribute much beauty to this world. How do you express yourself artistically? How does this benefit your recovery? Is it ever helpful to explore confusing issues and/or feelings through your artistic medium?

Take Care!
Jacquelyn

Suggested books?

Dear Gals,
Please post books you like, suggest, here. Feel free to tell us about the book, maybe it can be like a little book report/book club. It is worth doing, if for no other reason than when we have to explain the book it is more likely to be retained in our long term memory!

Hope???

What gives you hope that life can be lived without your eating disorder weighing you down and stealing your authentic experience of the highs and lows of life?

Body Image and the Media...

Dear Bloggers,
What are your thoughts about the media's glorification of extreme thinness and the message behind it suggesting that female power, appeal and fullfillment lies in mastering ones body and looking as perfect as possible? I think it is a terribly destructive message, particularly to our young women who are saturated with this message in the media. It makes me mad! I do not buy into it! Beauty, power, fulfillment are much more complex issues than looking like a barbie doll!
We have many areas to develop these rewards in such as our relationships with others, with God, nature, art, music, meaningful work, animals, charity, and just being a "human being" not "human doing", etc...

What do y'all think?
